Today, campers (Los Toros and Los Churros) were introduced to the language and culture of Spain. To start the day, Los Toros learned about where Spain is and its language: they learned how to say "hello" and "goodbye", who they are and how old they are. They also learned a little bit about the weather and counting. We ended the session with a game of Simón dice… (Simon Says…). Meanwhile, Los Churros were decorating their craft bags and making Spain's flag. After the merienda (snack), the groups switched. I was impressed by the level of comprehension of both groups. I often gave instructions in Spanish (with a little bit of mime) and the campers were doing what I asked before I could even repeat the instructions in English!
After lunch, Los Toros and Los Churros ended the day by making a pair of castanets. They will watch a flamenco video tomorrow and then use their castanets to perform their own Sevillanas dance (a type of flamenco dance)! Be sure to check back tomorrow for an update.
