Gator Train's Last Day in China

Gator Train campers spent their final day in “China” learning how to make Zongzi with Mrs. Forquer. Zongzi is a sticky rice dumpling that is stuffed with different fillings and wrapped in bamboo leaves. It is traditionally eaten during the Dragon Boat Festival, which falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar.

To wrap up our study of the Dragon Boat Festival, the campers also made a small bag filled with dried flowers. This bag is traditionally sold during the festival and is worn by the children. It not only smells good, but is also thought to keep away bad spirits and poisonous animals such as scorpions and viper snakes.

Another highlight of the day for the children was spending time outside playing in the sprinkler and with the water balloons. We also celebrated the first official day of summer with popsicles at the end of the day. We had a fantastic first week of camp and look forward to traveling to “Antarctica” next week.
